May 28, 1918 – March 4, 2009

Members of the Salisbury Fire Department along with members from other area fire departments laid to rest one of SFD’s oldest living members today. During the ceremony firefighters remembered fond memories they spent with ‘’Corky’’ on the fire ground. He was remembered as one of the hard chargers and go getters in the long history of the SFD.
Born May 28, 1918, he was a son of the late Branche and Beatrice Robertson Phillips.
Carlyle was a graduate of Wicomico Senior High School, where he was the first cheerleader. In Salisbury, Carlyle was a paperboy from the time he was in elementary school through high school. He was known for his wealth of knowledge of ”old Salisbury” and was often consulted by anyone who needed that valuable information.
He went on to work for 26 years for Gordy Drug Co. and then for 26 years for Central Drug Company. Carlyle was dedicated to his work in the community and was honored by the Shorebirds with ”Doc Phillips Day.” He was recognized for his 50 years of dedicated service to the American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge and Salisbury Fire Department. His memberships included, but are not limited to, the Salisbury Fire Department, the American Legion Post in Sharptown, VFW Post in Salisbury, ”Cooties” of the VFW Post 194, the Masonic Lodge in Salisbury, Tall Cedars, the Maryland Pharmaceutical Association, the Eastern Shore Pharmaceutical Association, the National Pharmaceutical Association, and he was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church.
