4/4/2011 – At approximately 6:05 PM Caroline dispatched Station 400 (Ridgely), Station 600 (Greensboro) and Paramedic 16 for an airplane crash on Race Track Road at the Ridgely Airport. Caroline advised responding units that Law Enforcement was on location and reported three subjects trapped in the aircraft.
Chief 4 (B. Utz) arrived on location to find a single engine aircraft in the field at the end of the runway. One subject was out of the wreckage however two subjects were still trapped. Chief 4 established command and requested two additional Paramedic units and Aviation for three, “Priority 1” patients. Crews had to use air bags to extricate the other two patients.
Maryland Trooper 1 transported 1 patient to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and Delaware Trooper 2 and Trooper 4 each transported 1 patient to Christiana Hospital in Delaware.
The FAA is investigating the cause of the accident.
